Once upon a time, a pony and his mother lived together in a stable.

從前，一匹小馬和媽媽住在馬棚里。  

One day, mother asked him to carry a bag of wheat to the mill. He was very excited. He left home and ran towards the mill happily.   

一天，媽媽讓他把麥子馱到磨坊去。他非常興奮地出發(fā)了，高興地向磨坊跑去。   

He saw an old cow eating grass on the bank. So he asked,“Excuse me,could you please tell me if I can cross the river?”   

不久，一條河擋住了他的去路?？粗魈实暮铀?，小馬不知道該怎么辦了。

他看見一只老牛在河岸邊吃草。于是問道：“打擾一下，請問，這條河我蹚能過去嗎？”  

“Of course!”the cow said.“It’s not very deep.The water is just as high as my knees.”

“   當然！”老牛說，“這河不是很深。水才剛沒過我的膝蓋?！?/p>

Just then, a squirrel jumped down from the tree. He shouted to the pony,“Please don’t go! It’s too deep.You’ll get drowned! One of my friends got drowned in this river yesterday.”   

就在這時，一只松鼠從樹上跳了下來，對小馬喊道：“不要?。∷盍?。你會淹死的！昨天我的一個朋友就在這條河里淹死了。”

The pony stopped and thought for a while, he decided to go back home to ask his mother.   

小馬停下來想了一會兒，他決定回家問問媽媽。   

When his mother heard this,she said to the pony,“My child, don’t always listen to others. You’d better try it by yourself, then you'll know what to do.”   

媽媽聽了，對小馬說：“我的孩子啊，不要總是聽別人的話。你最好親自嘗試一下，然后你就會知道該怎么做了?！?nbsp;  

The pony ran to the river again. And he walked across the river carefully.   

小馬又跑到河邊，小心翼翼地蹚過河去。   

It turned out that the river was neither as shallow as the cow said nor as deep as the squirrel described.   

原來，河水既不像老牛說的那樣淺，也不像松鼠說的那樣深。
